Usually in life our decisions are more complicated than that, but just for fun, I thought I’d give you a chance to think about a few straightforward choices today. Hope you’ll share your answers in the comments below. Don’t let my picks influence you in the slightest.
1. Alpha or Beta?
Absolutely Alpha! To quote the Ice Age mudpot babes: “The sensitive ones always get eaten.”
2. Virgin Widow or Secret Baby?
Ok, I know I said this was “either, or,” but on this one I have to pick door number 3. I’m constitutionally opposed to formulas of any kind. I’d rather write (and read!) a story that doesn’t color inside the lines. I prefer something that’s surprising and not quite safe.
3. Time Travel or Futuristic?
Since I write historicals, the concept of time travel is appealing. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that I’d want to come back to the 21st century pretty quickly. Indoor plumbing, air travel and Starbucks are just too good to give up.
4. Hot as Sin or Cold as Ice?
I prefer the strong, silent type. If a guy’s cold as ice, there will definitely be steam when you add heat!
5. Spinster or First Season Out?
I’d rather read about the “sadder, but wiser” heroine, whether she’s a spinster or a debutante. Who among us hasn’t had a “Gee, I wish I’d never dated him” guy in our past? My heroine Viola in Touch of a Thief certainly had one. All heroines deserve a second chance to get things right.
6. England or Anywhere but?
“Oh, to be in England now that spring is here!” However, I also enjoy stories that take me other places. I’m reading MJ Putney’s Dark Mirror now and it’s a time travel that sends young Regency mages to other places.
7. Vampire or Shape Shifter?
Human. Guys are complicated enough without adding fangs or fleas. Oh, dear! Now I’ve probably upset all the vampire and shifter fans out there. I’m so sorry. That’s not my intent. The whole not-getting the vamp/were thing is my personal quirk. That said, I understand the allure of a courtly old soul in a forever hot young body. And what woman doesn’t secretly think she’s living out Beauty and the Beast sometimes? But the love stories that call to me are more about the delicate dance between two souls than the supernatural qualities of one of the lovers.
8. Small Town or Big City?
I live in a big city (Boston) and I love all that it has to offer, but I’m a small town girl at heart. I like running into people I know at the grocery store. I’m ok with everybody knowing my business because it means they care about me. In a big city, it’s easy to feel alone in a crowd.
9. Wallflower or Belle of the Ball?
Not having any personal experience being a Belle, I’d have to say Wallflower. I always root for the underdog.
10. Unrequited love or love at first sight?
Unrequited love seems too sad. Love at first sight seems too shallow. My heroes and heroines fall into the “distrust-at-first-sight, but-I’d-still-like-to-find-out-how-you-look-naked” category.
Now it’s your turn. Answer one or all ten! I’m all ears.
